If only the Chinese ran the US. Well not really, but the Chinese have trains that average ~300 km/h (185 miles/hr) between scheduled stops. This is not maximum speed - this is average speed from end to end and these trains are in operation now. Imagine getting from New York to Boston comfortably in an hour and ten minutes.
